At Medics UK we have been devoted to breaking new ground from the outset.

And we are constantly seeking new opportunities to innovate.

This is why we are so delighted to have had the opportunity to work with Middlesbrough Council on a high-profile initiative aimed at relieving frontline NHS services and providing vulnerable people in the town with a signpost to alternative care and a better way of life.

In 2014, representatives from the council asked us to partner them in setting up the Safe Haven Centre, a dedicated medical resource in the heart of Middlesbrough town centre.

The authority needed a clinically experienced and capable team to help provide vital first-line treatment to people struggling with an addiction to drugs or alcohol, or vulnerable after a night out.

We helped them to turn the idea into a reality – planning for resources and staffing, liaising with key services on behalf of the council – and now providing the highly-skilled medical personnel to run the centre.

The outcomes of the project have exceeded expectations. The local ambulance service routinely drops patients off at the Save Haven Centre for minor injuries treatment, freeing up their ambulance and A&E resources to deal with more emergency cases and typically ensuring people get treated faster.

Our Medics UK Safe Haven team also travel to where people are to treat them when necessary. And, working with complementary organisations, the centre also now provides highly effective signposting to other support bodies that can help people struggling with addiction to turn their lives around. Our joint efforts have had a significant impact and attracted national attention.

MedicsUK is also the council’s go-to provider of event medical support for gatherings like concerts, Remembrance Day parades and the annual Mela Asian festival.
