Clerk of the Course Kirkland Tellwright has been involved with horses and racing for as long as he can remember and has worked with the Jockey Club for most of his career. His job sees him travelling around the country to various high-profile race meets including Cheltenham, Aintree, Epsom, Newmarket and Carlisle. He said: “Working in this industry truly is a vocation. Naturally there are highs and lows and in this country the weather plays a huge part of course!”
The regulations require a specific level of medical care and facilities to be available on site, and that’s where Medics UK, as experts in the provision of such care at large-scale events, come in.
“Medics UK have proved time and again that they really do cut the mustard,” said Kirkland. “They provide paramedic ambulances for jump and flat events, and they do it very effectively. On race day, the paramedics work under the senior racecourse medical officer, and it’s a very smooth, efficient process.
“The team continually demonstrate exceptional commitment and we have full confidence in the capabilities of Medics UK, their equipment, their people and the overall quality of their service.”
Inevitably, the nature of the sport means that fallen jockeys could sustain potentially serious injuries, and the medics must respond accordingly. Kirkland added: “I have complete faith in the medical team, who mobilise as quickly as possible to assist anyone in need of attention. We simply cannot compromise on medical safety at our events and Medics UK afford the management teams, the jockeys and the spectators great peace of mind.”
